A Task…

There seems to be a pretty good idea about how it started and when it started. They say they even have it down to the person and meal that started it. Why that information is important, I have no idea. Seems to me, at this point, that information is useless.

Everyone has similar ideas on how to slow it down, but the execution has been a mess. I’m not sure anything can really be accomplished until we’re all on the same page, at the same time. That’s probably not going to happen, so I’m reserved to the notion that this is the new normal for quite some time.

It is what it is.

My orbit has left the draconian solutions on the shelf in favor of what I can only describe as draconian suggestions – that being they are “suggesting, recommending, and sort of ordering” what otherwise would be viewed as ridiculous – but they aren’t using the baton of law to enforce them in such a way as to spark total outrage at the establishment.

At this point I should add that while in my geography they are doing a bang-up job of it, they are also the ones we charged with keeping something like this from happening in the first place. So while I applaud them for their efforts, I can’t help but think they’ve left us with nothing to do but react at this point.

The mental toll of all this is yet to be seen, but it’s going to be steep. The economic cost can be easily addressed, and it will be, but the debt on our collective emotional state…that’s going to take some time – assuming we get that far. To take a largely free people and in a matter of days remove most semblance of that life is catastrophic. We, as a culture, weren’t prepared for that.

I honestly believe it’s going to do more damage than any life-obliterating virus ever could.

That’s what bothers me most. We’ve removed what set this place apart from the rest of our planet – and in fact, I can’t help but think it was that singular characteristic, that simple approach to life and freedom and being, that is our biggest enemy in all of this.

And the task to right that ship is going to be monumental. You can’t flatten that curve with restrictions or “orders” or bailout checks.

This debt is going to come due.
