Countless open gyms and two long days of tryouts – now we wait.
It was interesting to watch the process of a couple dozen 13 year olds all trying to score a spot on a team with less than a couple dozen open positions. The guys running the show were pretty hard on the kids during tryouts and made the point several times that “in 7th and 8th grade, you play to win! You’re men now! ROAR!!!!”, however – and here’s my issue with the whole thing – these same “Manly Men” have decided the final decision will be decided on an 8 ½ x 11 sheet of paper taped to an office door.
If you guys are as manly as you think you are – and you’re not – you’d look these kids in the eyes, thank them for coming and trying out and working their butt off, and tell them to try again next year. You don’t “post a sheet” on an office door to keep you from having to face a hopeful 13 year old and say, “sorry, not this year”.
Seems pretty cowardly to me. Show some respect for these kids – even the one’s who won’t make the team. Be the man you think you are.
I hope #1 makes the team, but if he doesn’t, he’ll be back to “check the sheet” next year.
